The Early Fifties Remembered

Three photos from the early fifties. The first one was taken at 89 Bancroft lane, one of the first houses to be built on Ladybrook Estate in the late forties. After the war it was usual for children to wear hand down clothing from their older sibling, it was unfortunate that the boys had older sisters. From left to right are Jeff Penford, Marguerite Penford, Alan Bridges, Pamela Bridges and Roger Brown who some people may remember as he was the Barber at Ladybrook for many years.

The second photo is of the children at Broomhill School getting ready for the Queen’s Coronations Celebrations on the second of June 1953.
The third photo is the same preparations at Rosemary School.

  • Incredible photo’s of a time when we were more comfortable with ourselves and innocent as to our behaviour. The costumes would have taken some effort to make as I’m sure not many were “off the peg”.
Today many of the costumes would be seen as “politically incorrect”, but they are of their time.
Photo’s 1 & 2 show the Clark’s sandals that the footwear of our generation wore, (I’m 1950 born). Let’s hope someone recognises themselves.
