Mansfield Station Railway Special

I worked on the railway in the early 60s as a fireman on steam engines and well remember Mansfield station. Mansfield engine shed closed and everything transferred to Kirkby-in- Ashfield loco shed where I was based. Towards the end of passenger traffic I remember doing a crew change at the station taking a 9f special to Derby. The driver who’s name I can only remember as John didn’t read his instructions and missed stopping at I think Trent or Attenborough causing the guard to emergency brake and passengers piling on to the track to walk back to the station in order to catch their connections. We changed crew at Derby the only thing I can remember is the relief driver saying to John is “your wanted on the Phone” he never said anything to me but his ears looked as if they were burning. I was just doing a job at the time but now would like to know more ie where did it start and finish and does any one remember the loco number or have any photos? There was plenty of photographers taking pictures.

  • That would be 08/05/65 when a special train to Doncaster from Birmingham and back changed engines from a Crab (42715) to a 9F (92155) at the then closed Mansfield Town Station
