New memorial gates

These two Photo’s loaned to me by Roger Brown are of his Grandad  John Henry Brown who was the chairman of the District Council in 1949, He is seen here at a Consecration Ceremony at Yeoman Hill Park Mansfield Woodhouse on November 6th 1949. The new ornate gates were for the memory of local men that fought and died during the second world war 1939/45 The vicar was the Rev A.G.Barker from St Edmonds church. With the war still fresh in their minds it was a good turn out on a cold November day. Does anyone recognise any of their ancestors and also has can be seen on the back of the photo’s they were taken by Vallance’s of Church Street, a well known business back then. Has anyone got any memories of Vallance’s Photography.

  • In the top photograph my grandfather John Gill – long time organist and choirmaster at St Edmunds – is second left in the back row (wearing glasses). Next to him on his left , although it’s not too clear a picture, I think is my father Kenneth Gill, later Principal of Portland College

  • I recall (albeit vaguely), that the ‘Vallance Photography’ business had photo developing and printing premises on Milton Street Mansfield way back in the very early ’50’s’. Even earlier perhaps. A long, long time ago.
