Sid Wolfe and in background his wife Beatrice. When Sid died his youngest son John took over the business. When he married they lived above the shop, later to become a store, I remember a penny farthing and a wooden bone shaker up there.
I bought my first race bike from him a Carlton, I went to the Raleigh cycle works to pick it up, about 1963. About that time they sold mopeds as well. I travelled from Birkenhead Woodside to Mansfield by train, walked through the marketplace to the bike shop in Columba St. I understand the shop is not there anymore.
My grandfather (full name Arthur Sydney Wolfe) was a very keen cyclist. He gave me a three-wheel bicycle for my fifth birthday. Sid and John also did bike repairs and wheel building at a rear workshop. Sid and his wife lived in Worksop.

I remember the name and the business from my teenage years long ago,’50’s, but don’t recall the shop being on Clumber Street. Was there another branch elsewhere in town? I lost track in ’63 when I moved away from town although Nottingham, Carlton, Lenton and more remain vivid, as does the Raleigh name, ever popular and reliable.
Interesting bit of history, thanks!
