This is a view of West Bank Avenue and the area where Tesco is now taken by my late father Brian Straw I’ve no idea of the date but would guess 60s or 70s it was taken from the fire station

In the 1970s I was a pupil at St Philip Neri and then St Bede’s Middle School and went on to All Saints. Our school field fence joined onto the piece of land where Tesco now stands, before that it had been a carpark and the Leisure Centre. But when I was at school it was still grass and we used to enjoy watching various fairs and circuses setting up there. One year there was a dead whale on a lorry which we were all taken to see. I think it was named Bertha. The school used to get free tickets to give out for the circus. A girl in my year called Sharon Grocott used to live in the white house which can be seen in the background of the photo on Chesterfield Rd – I think her Dad was Head Teacher at the Garibaldi School.
