Church Lane site

I often park in Church Lane, at the end of Littleworth, and use the underpass to go into town, passing St Peters and Church Street.

In Church Lane there was a near-derelict, now demolished building. I have a vague recollection that this building had been the site of something notable, a world first or invention.

Does anyone know anything about the site?
