To say that The Old Lord Byron was a busy old pub, something I can confirm from my younger days… Children were not allowed to enter, and yet I can recall standing at the door trying to get a message to my sister .. On more than one occasion . The picture I have drawn is just as I remembered it to be. The reasons I would say for it’s popularity , would be down to the allotments that surrounded what could be called ” The Watering Hole”. Plus the lack of competition from any close surrounding pubs. It was also a gentlemen’s pub , where they could be seated in the best room away from the crowds . There were many drinkers quite happy to be stood in the passageway holding their pints and chatting to whom ever was stood next to them holding a drink. I think that is one thing Mansfield folk are very good at, they can start and hold a conversation with anyone.
Back to the sketch, there were four rooms leading from the entrance hall, One best room ,and three others. Always thought what a small bar it was to serve so many rooms, plus people drinking outside in Summer when there were lighter nights. Bar helpers were always there.
What a fantastic part of our local history the Lord Byron became. As were several other pubs and clubs in the Mansfield area.
