The Old Meeting House and the Four Seasons

This photograph was taken by Mr Evans at the time the when the Four Seasons Shopping Centre was being built in the 1970’s. Look across the building works and you can see clearly a building that was once the Parsonage for the Old Meeting House Chapel and at the back of that the Chapel itself.

It is interesting to note that since the 1970’s while further changes have taken place in the area, i.e. shops have changed hands, the bus station has closed, the two buildings mentioned above are still there.

The Old Meeting House, (Unitarian Chapel) which can be accessed from Stockwell Gate  is now over three hundred years old and is the oldest nonconformist building in Nottinghamshire that is still being used for its original purpose. On the outside it is quite an ordinary building, but inside it is full of character and history. The Parsonage was sold many years ago and is now Bryan and Armstrong Solicitors.

  • Remember OMH too,can anyone  remember if there were a cemetery outside the chapel ? In the 70’s plus remember seeing headstones leaning against the building or may have been placed in the ground remembering loved ones from bygone years .Maybe there are people who will add to this question of the above .Glad to seeing the building didn’t become something of an empty space during the changing of the town.

  • This is a wonderful photo by Mr Evans and shows the OMH Parsonage and OMH Chapel amidst all the redevelopment in the 1970s. The Parsonage is now used by the charity, United Response and the three hundred year old chapel has a vibrant congregation which still enjoys a variety of services and activities during the week. It opens every Saturday morning for visitors and each September takes part in the National Open Days Heritage Weekend. This year there will be lots of different events taking place from 7th to 9th Septembe. Do come along.
