In Rememberance

After watching the very moving television programmes Saturday 30th July and Sunday 31st July 2017 on the Passchendaele commemorations I decided to check the information I had relating to some of the names on our Forest Town War Memorial to see if any of our local lads were there.

I found that Lance Corporal Thomas Bullock, 305586  2nd/8th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regt.) died aged 20 on Wednesday, 26th September 1917, he is remembered with honour on the TYNE COT MEMORIAL'.

Lance Corporal Bullock was the son of George and Hannah Bullock, of 15 Big Barn Lane, Mansfield. Notts.

Also,

Rifleman William Garton 43065 10th Bn, Royal Irish Rifles died age 28 on 7th June 1917 is remembered with honour on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

William Garton was the son of John and Agnes Garton of Lime Grove, Forest Town, Mansfield.

I believe it is only after watching the programmes I have mentioned that many of us realise just what horrors those young men went through. In 1921 when our War Memorial was dedicated it was bad enough that the families of the men knew they had died, without knowing the extent of what they suffered.

I too watched the fantastic pictures of the first World War , shown by the B.B.C. I was spellbound. What was fantastic for me, was that I paid a Pilgrimage to both Tyne Cot Cemetery, and the Battlefields of Passchendaele.  I relived every minute of the two hour Broadcast, the Passchendaele experience, through the trenches, it made you realise what those poor souls went through, and what they gave for their country. The whole area was a solemn place to be.
