William Kaye

These photographs illustrate the work done by William Kaye during his time in office.

He was elected to the Town Council in 1949 and served on many committees, including the important Finance Committee.

After his installation as Mayor in 1964 on of his first official duties was to head a civic party on a delegation to Heiligenhaus, Mansfield’s ‘twin’ town in Germany.  He later described the visit as one of the finest experiences of his life.

Mrs Kaye supported her husband in all his activities and played a full and gracious part as his Mayoress.

  • Referring to Mr Kaye in the Cattle Market Bar. My grandad held the licence for the Bar along with the Ladybrook Hotel and the king and Miller on Stockwell Gate.

  • Mr Kaye (The Mayor), could be found at the cattle market every Monday morning, mainly in the Cattleman’s Pub, stood on the sawdust covered floor with a pint of Mansfield Ale in his hand, and mixing with the cattle men. One could see straight into the bar through the open door on the corner of the very unmistakable fine drinking establishment.
