Mansfield Operatic Society

This was an article that appeared in the Forest Town Crier Community Newspaper in December 2005. It was entitled ‘Make Mine Music’ and was by Ralph Hawley.  As former editor of the Forest Town Crier I am reproducing this as I am sure it will bring back memories for some of ourmansfieldandarea viewers- Pauline Marples

I enclose an old Operatic Society Programme from 1954 in which are photographs of show people from Forest Town. During the war they would give impromptu concerts in the Drill Hall.

In the opera programme there are photographs of  Jack Domelow the director who later lived on Clipstone Road,

Calvin Taylor (tap dancer) (and as Mr Twiddle)

and

Olive Pearson who taught us at the Methodist Chapel.

There are also Reg Henson, Syd Slack and Gladys Thorpe from Mansfield and other people from the Forest Town area.

I was born at 25 Clipstone Road West (now No 20) and attended Forest Town School.

  • A few names of the cast are familiar, Jack Tyler, I think he was Secretary of Coxmoor Golf club for a few years. Barbara Cale was a singer who did the the rounds of Methodist Chapel productions and I believe came from Warsop along with her father. Joan Scully, I remember her singing Alice blue gown at a Garden Party in the Manor House grounds, Mansfield Woodhouse in the 50s. Jack Domelow who I thought conducted the Male Voice Choir in the 50s.
