  • Some of the older folks’ whose comments are from earlier memories , take me back to when my sister Ina used to take me to the Hippodrome.  and yes, It was always known as the 2d Rush. For that. is what it cost to get in. We walked from Bradder Street, along Quarry Lane, round Saint Mark’s Church, and along Nottingham Road. And before going down Midworth Street, we called at the Fruit and Veg. shop for a hap’ath of Monkey Nuts to eat in the pictures. I guess all those cleaners loved sweeping up the mess that was left.

  • People of my parents era (born in 1908) always used to refer to the place as the Hippodrome I never heard them call it anything else but I only ever knew it as the Century. I don’t know when the name changed but the first time I saw a film there would have been the mid 1950s but we didn’t go there very often I don’t know why, we usually went to either the Empire, Granada or the Grand.

  • My mum took me to see Heidi at the Hippodrome many years ago, and yes there was a fresh fish place just below, I used to go there on a Friday to get the fish for tea.

  • I remember the Century,  I walked past that place daily on my way to Church Street for my paper round.   My mother was a player of bingo and she loved the the Century. She came home with some good wins many times.   I also remember my mother  sending me down to buy fish, I reckon the fishmonger was a building next door to the Century,  can any one recall?  Old photos of Mansfields brings back memories of my childhood.

  • Sorry it was not the Three Musketeers but The Three Mesquiteers with Ray Livingston and John Wayne in his first films. The third member whose name I do not recall but he was a ventriloquist. The most vivid memory was that the film started with a junction of three tracks merging into one with a rider travelling down each joining up to sort out problems. The Good Guys always wore white hats, The Baddies Black. These oldies are available to buy on the NET on DVD if you are interested, real nostalgia for our age group

  • As previously stated I went to The Rock to the Tuppeny Rush on Saturday afternoon after going to the Plaza in the Morning.  Other serials I remember were Flash Gordon, The Three Musketeers, Johnny Mack Brown, and Gene Autry. Regarding King Kong I saw that at The Grand and the young lady jumped on my knees when he first appeared, that for me was more memorable it was the first time I ever had a date with a member of the opposite sex WOW.

  • Arthur I see you also went to the Rock and I imagine the Shirley Temple Club with its Star cards and the Xmas present. They were great and memorable times The Kids of today don’t know what a memorable time they missed and will not have memories we have It’s a pity TV will never replace those Halycion Days we remember so well as we do

  • I used to go to the rush at the HIPPODROME to watch the Lone Ranger serial, also went to The Rock at the bottom of Montague Street were I lived at that time, one film that I remembered was King Kong with Fay Wray starring in it.
