Mansfield Male Voice Choir

Mansfield and District Male Voice Choir was formed in 1944 by the merging of the Rainworth Male Voice Choir (1926) and the Mansfield Orpheus Choir. Mansfield and District Male Voice Choir have a long and illustrious history in the musical tradition of Mansfield.

In 2003 Meryl Chambers was appointed Musical Director and now the choir boasts over 50 enthusiastic and committed choristers. In 2007 Ian Grice accepted the position of Deputy Musical Director and our accompanist, Margaret Ball is a very experienced local musician. These three
talented people are an invaluable asset to the choir.

The choir not only performs in and around the Mansfield area regularly raising thousands of pounds for local and national charities, but also country wide. The choir history portrays numerous prizes winning performances at National and Regional level.

More recent highlights include singing in No 10 Downing Street and on two occasions having the honour of being one of only two English choirs to be invited to sing at the Royal Albert Hall in 2009 and the Manchester Evening News Arena in 2012 with the Welsh Association of Male Choirs, Joint
Festival of Welsh Massed Voices. In July 2012 the choir completed a tour of Wales singing 4 concerts with other Welsh choirs.

2013 was a busy year and included singing with nine male choirs and the Band of the Royal Marines at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham. This year [2014] is already fully booked and includes entering the prestigious BBC Choir of the Year Competition as well as concerts in Mansfield Palace
Theatre, Southwell Minster, Bury St Edmunds, Newstead Abbey and many local churches.

  • I have been a M&DMVC member since 2003. I have amazing memories of our singing in 10 Downing Street, at the Royal Albert Hall, Tate Modern and other more local concerts. Friendships have endured over the years and on Tuesdays it still gives me a ‘buzz’ to attend practice with the ‘lads’ (some in their 80’s and 90’s!)
