A Soldier of The First World War..

I have been looking at this picture for nearly 80 years, never really knowing who he really was. I learned eventually who he was – he was my mother’s first boyfriend. He answered the call of the country during the 1914-1918 war, becoming one of the thousands who never returned. He was a young man who left behind , like many others, his girlfriend and his family to fight for King and Country. He wasn’t an officer, he was a member of the other ranks, just doing as he was told.He was one of those who helped change the course of history, and gave his all.  My mother never talked about him. I believe the handsome young man’s name was Frederick Paulger,  and he came from the Ravensdale area.

  • There is a Frederick William Paulger on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.  He died on 20 September 1916, aged 23.  He was in the Lincolnshire Regiment and it states he was the son of Mr. F. H. Paulger of 2, Botany, Mansfield, Notts. He is buried in the Dartmoor Cemetery at Becordel-Becourt.
