Mystery Photo 1908 - A Comparison

Re Mystery Photo 1908 page by David Clay and the susequent interest this has aroused I have done a comparison photo.

I was of the opinion that other than a replacement bay window (removing the stonework) and new upvc windows, the building was / is fundamentally the same. I’ve lined-up and followed round the stone cills and lintels on each of the openings and how they relate to each other horizontally and vertically. Also, the pitch of the lean to and the boundary wall and its changes in level – all of these are a very, very close match.

  • I have discovered that the Methodist chapel on the left opened in 1904 which adds to my suggestion that the photo is indeed, quite possibly, 1904.

  • I have checked the 1910 Valuation Survey which gives owners and occupiers of houses and land in Mansfield and the Blythes occuped a 4 acre field on Chesterfield Road which explains their advertisement bilboard on the picture. The mystery is solved thanks to Darren Turner.

  • Spot on that Darren, it’s got to be the place, nice work. I’d say 1904-5 then, just before the trams?

  • For the interest of people viewing this page who don’t know the area, would you like to say what street and area it is please.

  • This is the Brownlow Road junction with Chesterfield Road. And I totally agree that Dave Clay’s original photo is the same place as Darren’s comparison photo.
