Photos, streets, shops, people, always good to have another look. Almost 40 years ago since the pictures were taken. These memories never fade!

Photo No 6 Rosemary St. I remember the chemist use to be run by Mr Dennis in the 50-70’s. The Drs was across the road. Dr Lauder who gave out lolly pops. The house past the chemist at the top of St John St is where Miss Ellis lived, a teacher from Ethel Wainwright School.
I started work at the Foister Clay and Ward in Mansfield in 1956 as an overlocker on knitwear for Marks&Spencer. Me and my girl friend used to go in Jack’s Snacks quite often up by the side of the Shoe Co, it was just a little place but very popular, there used to be a regular crowd that worked on Rediffusion get in, does anyone else remember this place?
The Bakers shop in picture 2 sold penny loaves in the fifties. We used to buy one on the way home from school. Up the road and on the right was the hardware shop Blake & Beeleys and also a branch of Halfords, just cycles and accessories in those days.

Hi, the motorcycle dealers at New Cross Sutton was Taggs, not Wraggs.
Hi My mum and dad used to own the old post office on Leeming Street and was wondering if there are any photos showing that end of Mansfield of the old Cannon Cinema and Horse and Jockey and Post Office end of Mansfield. Thanks Sanjay
Hello Russell, I seem to recall the motorcycle shop near the railway viaduct on Albert Street was Copes in the 1950s, they were Triumph dealers and I will always remember seeing a new Triumph Bonneville for sale in the late 1950s for the princely sum of £249-19s-11d. After they moved out it became a booking and information office for Mansfield District Traction but I might be mistaken, after all that was well over 50 years ago.
Hi Russell Coleman, was it Wraggs on Midworth Street? I ask because I purchased a Lambretta sx 200 from there & I seem to remember it was called Henstocks then they moved out of town to Chesterfield Road, Wraggs was on the New Cross at Sutton in Ashfield, we also had Richardsons Motorcycles along Portland Street there was a café next door to Richardsons, but access was also gained via the hill down from the station bus stops to Belvedere St., there was also Frank Ingers Motor Cycles on Rock Hill next to the old ambulance station
Does anyone have a picture of Wragg’s Motorcycles on Albert street and also on Newgate Lane please?

Does anyone remember Stockwellgate being called Crosswellgate? My Aunt who lived in the area from the 1930’s always used to call it this and I have seen a couple of old postcards, posted 1906 & 1908, with photos labelled Crosswellgate. Apparently A.S,Buxton’s history of Mansfield says the street was Stockwellgate from 1315 onwards but there must have been some local blip at the turn of the century. Please ask your elderly relatives!!!!
Think you’re right about picture 1 Alan it is St. Peters Way, looks like the car on the left of the picture in the right hand lane is going to turn right onto Midworth St., and the car on the right of the picture could be going straight on to Littleworth which you can’t do now since they built the new inner ring road.
The actual address of St. Peters Church is Church Side, Mansfield. Church Lane begins on the corner where the old Conservative Club building is. I can remember the Rainworth bus stop just passed the Bridge Tavern. The small stone building was Gelsthorpes chip shop and we often used to buy a bag of chips while waiting for the bus to Rainworth after a visit to the Granada cinema. I think the building is a barbers shop now. Isn’t St Peters Way the inner ring road?
Tom, you are also absolutely correct about the bus stop being near to Jody Gilbert’s Yard, but that was later. It is definite that the bus stop for Rainworth, Blidworth and Blue bus for Nottingham, was on St. Peters Way. Certainly up to 1950. It was in the early 50’s that it moved across the road near the Wesleyan Chapel/Jody Gilbert’s Yard.
Alan!! I think you are correct about photo 1, the Street is Church Lane, Midworth St starts around the corner!! Regards to the Bus Stop for Rainworth etc I thought you and others mentioned it as being the other side of the Bridge Pub next to the Wesleyan Chapel!!
I walked that alleyway with my dad many times in the 1950s it took you by the old maltings that belonged to Mansfield Brewary. Wasn’t there a food shop at the Church Street end of Midworth Street that was owned by a foreign gentleman that won a Wimbledon singles title in the late 40s or early 50s, I think his name was Jaroslav Drobney.
The more you look, the more you see. I’m sure some of the older generation will verify picture number 1 – it is where the kerb cuts in, and the road widens that was the bus stop for Rainworth, and Blidworth, also the bus for Nottingham. I believe the Bathroom shop was only half the size it is on the picture. Fred Perry had a Sports Shop next. And then, and then, we had the bus shelter , which consisted of a shop opening without a frontage, that had wooden latted seats all round the walls for passengers to sit whilst waiting. I also know there was a passageway that went round the backs and came out opposite the Hippodrome Cinema.
It is a long time since I used to go on Midworth Street, But unless my memory fails me, I cannot for the life of me place the picture as Midworth. To me it looks more fitting to be Saint Peter’s Way. Is it not the wall of St. Peter’s Church on the right of the picture ? Alan
Thank you for those commnets regarding the once shoe shop on Church Street.The photograph 12 Queen Street shows a shop called “Technics”. I remember this was once the record shop called Syd Booth many many memories and many a record bought from there - then possible the only record shop in the town.Sadly long gone but memories live on.
The shoe shop in question was Stanhopes.
The last shop on the corner of Toothill Lane that “Mansfield Woodhouse Lad” refers to has been many different shops over the years. I can’t personally remember it when it was a shoe shop, but what stick’s in my mind is when it was a toy shop in around 1969. It has also been an Italian style restaurant in the 1980’s and is currently a fast food takeaway shop
Photograph 2 Church Street, can anybody remember (to the right of the picture but not shown) a shoe shop called “Stanhopes” it was situated maybe the last shop before “Toothill Lane .
