Tree Planting Mystery

Another mystery photo from Mansfield Museums Chad negative collection. This says Woodhall Park Old Mill Lane, March 1983. There have been one or two new housing estates built by Barratts over the years on Old Mill Lane, Forest Town such as Forest Barn and the Chestnuts, but where was Woodhall Park?

  • I bought a house on Bullace Court in 1981. Barratts named the development here Woodhall Park and a lot of the roads had tree related names, Alder, Holly, Almond, Maple, Aspen. Barratts were still building here for some time, extending the estate through to Ravensdale via Barringer Road connecting Old Mill Lane to Bath Lane and Ravensdale Road. It is definitely Reg Strauther planting the tree.

  • I’m pretty sure that where the cars are in the background is the bridge over the river on Old Mill Lane. So the ceremonial planting was probably the start of the huge planting programme carried out by Barratts as part of the landscaping of the river banking leading up to what is now Fernleigh Rise.
