Oak Tree sports shop, I would pick my dart flights up from there so I could play in the Cuckoo Birch pub.
Tesco had a separate garden centre. There was a car motor parts shop heading back to car park, chemist opposite .
The shop between chemist shop and Whiteheads was a furniture shop I think ??
The first newsagent was Meesons – it changed hands later on. Tesco did sell clothes in the main store in early 1980’s I can remember having a plastic raincoat from there. My one memory of Meesons is they sold ‘Slushies’, this was the first time I had tried one. I remember the little garden centre and used to buy Singapore orchids and other flowers. I used to go in Tesco café too as it was the only one around the area then. I remember the houses being built on the estate, and used to play inside them when they were empty shells. I also remember a hot air balloon coming down in the heathers in late 70’s or early 80’s because the wind had dropped!
Yes, I’ve been dying to see photos from the inside of the old Tesco’s, I’m guessing that one was taken from the old upstairs restaurant. I used to love that restaurant, I was gutted when they got rid of it back in 1996! Still looks quite different to how I remember it though, presumably it had some sort of refurb between this point and the early 90s. In particular I don’t remember them selling clothes in the main store- they had a separate unit for that! The newsagents was always a John Menzies that I can remember, and there was also a garden centre back then. Would love to see more photos of the interior of both this Tesco, and the town centre store they foolishly got rid of.
