WW1 - Second Lieutenant Donald McCunn
Report in the Mansfield Chronicle
26 September 1918
MILITARY CROSS FOR WOODHOUSE OFFICER
It is with much pleasure that we record the awarding of the Military Cross to Second Lieutenant Donald McCunn Royal Field Artillery who prior to joining the army during the present war held the position of head master at Oxclose Lane Boys School, Mansfield Woodhouse. The official account for which the gallant conduct of which this distinction has been bestowed was contained in the issue of the ‘London Gazette’ for September 16th and was as follows:-
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under heavy machine gun fire at close range. He kept his section firing to the last covering the withdrawal of the remaining four guns. He showed great coolness and resource.
The action referred to took place on March 22nd last, during the German offensive. Lieutenant McCunn was wounded sustaining a compound fracture of the jaw on April 4th and was brought back to a London hospital on April 6th. He is still in hospital but practically well again we are glad to learn.
The inhabitants of Mansfield Woodhouse, and particularly the younger ones who were under Mr McCunns charge in his capacity as schoolmaster feel much pride and pleasure in the distinction which has been conferred upon him. Mrs McCunn is to be congratulated upon her husbands success and his recovery from the wound.
