Rosemary Street School

Information found in ‘Mansfield The Last Century’ published by The Old Mansfield Society tells us that the first Mansfield School Board was elected in 1898 and took control of elementary education in the town. To help plan a building policy the Board took a census of school age children and this resulted in Rosemary Street Elementary School being opened in 1900. It catered for boys, girls and mixed infants. Throughout the years until its closure a few years ago, many pupils and staff went through its doors, and there will be an abundance of memories still around. Below are two photographs of staff people may remember.

The site of Rosemary Street School is now housing accomodation (flats).

‘Mansfield The Last Century’ published by The Old Mansfield Society has an interesting section on Education 1891 – 1991

  • Hi Christine Gant I’m still alive and kicking. Some of the teachers when we were at Rosemary were Mr Hatfield, Mrs Birt, Mr Asher, Mrs Booth, Mrs Burrows, Mrs Quinn, Mr Evans, Mr Breedon, Miss Hurst and the headmaster was Mr Phillips nicknamed Waller. His deputy head was Mr Mather. Also there was another teacher who I think was named Mr Allcock. Hope this has helped you. Dave

  • Hi Christine,

Nice to hear from you again. The only person I know now is Tony Johnson . I have only been back in the UK once, about 15 years ago. Then I stayed with Tony for a couple of weeks.I am still in Australia - it’s been over 40 years now.      Gary

  • Hey Gary great to hear from you, you bet it’s been over 40 years, I turned 62 years yesterday!  No one ever remembered me, but I am surprised you don’t remember my brothers David and Colin Gant.  I was in A class but had friends in other streams. Janet Fell is someone else who was in my class too and Geraldine Cooke, Sharon Turner (I think it was). I was in A class, same as Dave Hawkins and Peter Whitehead. I’ve seen Peter Whitehead on and off through the years when I visited Mansfield (live in North Yorkshire and don’t get down Mansfield way much now). Dave Hawkins was in my class!  If you think of all the high-school movies they do nowadays and the boxes they put you in, Dave Hawkins would have been classed as the football jock!  I would have been the girl so easy to forget!  Oh well.  Do you know what happened to David Cartwright? Good to hear from you.

  • I remember some of these teachers too and was there at the same time as you Gary Noble…I remember Mr Ash – English/Maths, Mr Evans, Mr Phillips the headmaster who really set me on my vocational course, Mrs Burrows – RE/Sewing, Mr Mather who tore up my Science paper on the last exam of my school at Rosemary and told me to write it again, just because I finished it with time to spare!!  I went on to come first in Science!! DO NOT ask me how!

I think I remember you Gary and Brocklehurst.  Do your remember Dave Hawkins, Janet Fell, Geraldine Cooke, Peter Whitehead, David Cartwright, Pat Bonser…loads more but remember the surnames…hope I hear back from some of you, I think of my life at this time often…

  • Yea, I think your right, pretty sure the lady to the right of Mrs Phillips is MS Fairy (music teacher)

  • I was at Rosemary infants (1952 to 1954) seniors (1958 to 1962). I can remember the names of the front row L to R, Mr Breedon (Woodwork), Mrs or Miss ?, Mr Mather (Deputy Head), Mr Phillips (Headmaster), Mrs Burt (English), Mr Evans (Science) and Mr Rennolds (Maths). The lady third from the right on the back row I think is Mrs Phillips (Domestic Science) the wife of the headmaster. Sorry I don’t remember any of the others but I do recall Mr Mather joining the teaching staff in about 1960 so the photo would have been taken whilst I was a pupil there or not that long after I left. I now live about 10 miles south of Mansfield, I have done since 1973 so I’ve not seen any of my old schoolmates for many years except for one, he married a local girl and settled down here.
