Charlie Turner played against the Sir Julian Cahn X1 for the Bassetlaw League X1 in 1934 at the Loughborough Road ground in Nottingham and opened the batting with my grandfather John Hall (“JB”). Their opening partnership of 179 was the highest ever achieved against the famous Cahn X1 which only lost 19 games in 621 played up to 1942. JB reached his century (111*) in this fine drawn match.

I used to watch Charlie Turner as a boy who was interested in cricket.I believe he had been on the ground staff at Notts and was given a job at Mansfield Colliery so he could play for them at cricket. He was mentioned in G Langdales history of the Bassetlaw League as one of the best all rounders to have played in the league. As well as being an opening batsman he was a left arm spinner.
