Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital

More photographs and information scanned from booklets that it is surmised were given to Student Nurses when they went to train for their Orthopaedic Nursing Certificate at the hospital.

The booklets are not dated but I suggest the are in the 1950’s and 1960’s as Matrons Miss Prickett is given in one and Miss Custerson in others.

Winifred the Duchess of Portland was a founder figure of the hospital and a regular visitor there. She died in 1954 aged 91 and was mourned not just at the hospital but throughout the county.

Her daughter in law – Ivy, Duchess of Portland continued to visit the hospital whenever she was asked to. However as Professer William Waugh says in his book ‘The Development of Orthopaedics in the Nottingham Area’ – the hospital was now well established under the National Health Service and the relationship with the Portland Family must have changed.

These names of Matron(s) and medical staff will no doubt be remembered by both former staff and patients.
