British Legion Memories

Since 1921 when the British Legion was formed, men and women have been proud to be members of this Association, and they have taken part in parades and ceremonies in many towns and village. A selection of photo’s from around the Mansfield area reveal some of the people and events.

In 1971 when the British Legion was granted “Royal” status a floral Legion Crest was on display in Titchfield Park, Mansfield – see one of the photographs below. It would have been lovely to see this in colour.

The Royal British Legion web site, www.britishlegion.org.uk gives an insight into the history of the Legion.

  • Wonderful pictures and memories of both the British Legion and Mansfield as it was. The two pictures from 1964 on Church Street and the Market Place, show the Lord Mayor of Mansfield, Alderman William Kaye leading the parade on Church Street, and taking the “Salute” on the Market Place… A little unknown story about Mr. Kaye. At the onset of the first world war he joined the call for duty to serve his country. He served 2 months, and was then kicked out. They found out that Mr. Kaye had given his wrong age. He was much too young, and was therefore discharged from the Army. This year I shall be Attending a Memorial Service at the Marine Hall in Fleetwood on the 8th of November. You can bet I shall be on parade again with the others, and shall be wearing my poppy with pride.
