Crown Farm, Mansfield

The first picture shows Crown Farm, Mansfield circa 1913. Look closely to see the railway carriages from Mansfield Colliery in the back ground. The colliery became know as ‘Crown Farm colliery’ due to its close proximity to the farm.

The dapper looking man is James Newton who was a tenant farmer at Crown Farm from around 1894 to 1917 – to discover more about Crown Farm and the Newton family see our web page ‘Crown Farm Mansfield, and the people who lived there.’

The two newspaper adverts give an insight into farming at the beginning of the 1900’s – the livestock such as Black Boars, Bullocks and Ewes. The range of implements are fascinating – it would be interesting to see a comparison list of today’s modern farm machinery?

It is interesting to see that James Newton is said to be ‘Quitting’ the farm, not just vacating it!
