On Your Bike

These two John Player cigarette cards show tandem cyclists E.V. Mills and W.G. Paul, and W.W. Maxfield on the solo bike, all were noted cyclists of there time

The reverse of each card gives information on cycling positions and the men.

It is believed that they all took part in events at Forest Town Welfare’s Cycle Track, does anyone recall seeing them there?

  • I was a member of the KW’s in the 50’s and a lot was spoken about Bill Maxfield. Years later when living in Holland and out biking I stopped by a small cementary and there was a gravestone of a W W Maxfield – I naturally wondered if it was Bill Maxfield of the KW’s. E V Mills on the tandem picture, I used to see him frequently as I was riding to and from work IRFLNriding in the opposite direction near to where I lived. • WW Maxfield was my uncle and he went on to win a World title and an Empire Games gold medal. He was born and brought up in Sheffield, so I think it very likely that he raced in Mansfield. He went to London in about 1937 and raced for Kentish Wheelers at Herne Hill Velodrome. When World War II was declared he was in Italy to take part in the World Cup series. He became a pilot in the RAF Volunteer Reserve and was listed as missing, presumed killed on 27th December 1943, aged 27. I have some press photos of his cycling career.
