Just found this site and just had to have a search. I was on the Gas Board from 1965 to 1971, I started as an apprentice gasfitter. I recognise a few faces but they are lot younger there than when I knew them. Arthur Jenkins (Doc) was the first fitter I mated, Reg Waterfall was the guy that did most of the plumbing required, he could wipe a joint quicker than anyone I know. Eric Slaney I remember also, there could be a few others but I can't make them out. I'm sure my old forman should be there Arthur Marriott but I don't see him, his father was Mayor. Alf Lock was around about the same time. These guys would be retirement age around the end of the 60's and would have been on the Gas Board all their lives, when it was called something other than the Gas Board. Great memories!

Hi Gordon. My name is Mark Sutcliffe, I live in Mansfield. I'm interested in Austin Cambridge and Morris Oxford cars. I can remember as a child in the '70's A60 vans parked in the Gas Board yard in Mansfield. Some brown & white, some blue & white if I remember correctly. I don't suppose you might have any memories or even pictures of the vehicles from that time? Best wishes, Mark.

Hi Mark I do remember the vans, I think they were the formans vans. We had a colour change of the vans while I was there, they were brown/yellow and blue/white if I recall correctly. I drove one once and ran over a dog at Ollerton, not on purpose it ran out from a gate, the police had to put it down! The shock absorbers on them were rubbish! you bounced down the road if you went any speed. We also had a J4. Sorry I haven't any pics. Regards Gordon
