Mansfield Town Centre Heritage Trail

Mansfield Town Centre Heritage Trail is a tour that will guide you around some of the interesting buildings and monuments in this bustling market town and will help to build up a picture of life here during the past one thousand years. This trail is also available as an audio download and there are accompanying video files

The walk has been divided into colour coded sections and you can decide what you want to see and how far you want to walk. If you have the time and energy to follow the entire route, it will last about two hours. There are places in each section where you can take a rest and get refreshments. Look out for the bronze plaques set into the ground at some of the stops on the tour. These carry a little more detail about the buildings and monuments.

Please download and look at the guide before you set off to make sure you see everything that you want to. Please take care whilst walking around. look around you for interest but watch out for traffic. Some of the roads on the route are busy.

Enjoy finding out about the hidden stories that exist behind the façade of the town ‘ s buildings. This tour is by no means a complete record of the history of Mansfield and there is a wealth of info rmation available at Mansfield Museum, the starting point of the tour.

While you are following the trail, take a few extra moments to look at the details on the buildings. There is a wealth of info rmation to be discovered by looking up at the uppermost parts of a building. By piecing together the info rmation from the buildings, monuments and plaques on this trail you can begin to learn more about the development of Mansfield through the ages as it grows from a small settlement to a thriving  industrial market town.

The heritage trail covers buildings on Leeming Street , the Market Place, Church Street, West Gate and other interesting places around Mansfield town centre. The tour, which can be followed by booklet or by audio downloads, includes a series of plaques positioned at 25 areas of historical interest around the town, including the Samuel Brunts building on Leeming Street, the 18th century West Gate House and the 16th Century Ye Olde Ramme Inne on Church Street.

The audio trail can be downloaded onto a mobile phone or MP3 player and anyone with the relevant video technology can also watch short video clips and photos while on the trail. The Children’s Trail details activities to enjoy while in the Market Place.
