Mansfield Fire Museum
Mansfield Fire Museum is located in the former Nottinghamshire Fire Brigade Training School Premises that are at the rear of the new Fire Station on Rosemary Street in Mansfield. The Museum is under constant development and new exhibits are added regularly.
Our aim is to collect, preserve and present to the public, Fire Service memorabilia and other items relating to the history of fire fighting of local or worldwide origin, from the earliest to present day.
During 1989 the Museum was appointed custodians of ‘The Merryweather Collection’,
a collection of Fire Service Memorabilia owned by Merryweather the Fire Engineers of London.

The siren at the top of the old Fire Station old tower which sounded danger and all clear during the Second World War, then after the war it was sounded when there was a fire, was mounted on a wooden base and by about 1964 the base was going rotten. I know this because I was employed by a local engineering company who were contracted to make and fit a new one made from steel. I was one of the people that made and fitted it. The hardest part of the job was getting the sections to the top of the tower, we pulled them up from one landing to the next with a rope. If I remember correctly there were fixed metal ladders to get from one level to the next, I can’t recall how many levels there were probably 5 or 6. Once we managed to get all the parts to the top of the tower we only took about an hour to take it off the old base and mount it on the new one, I think three of us did the job so we must be some of the few civilians to stand at the top of Mansfield fire station tower.
