The Car Park behind the Co-op

This is a photograph which I took myself way back  in the early ’60s .The picture then was a car park behind the old Co-op building and the public house I think was called the Queens Head. Both were on Queen Street – I think the car park was then called Quaker Way.

Looking at the picture it depicts old buildings of which belonged to the Co-op . I believe many years ago before it became a car park it was an old cemetery and I’m sure many people could add more information on this . I am led to believe the old area is  now the new bus station serving many areas. Being a former resident  and being brought up in Mansfield Woodhouse I hold many memories of “woodus” and Mansfield itself .

  • Thank you for your comments Robert ,nice to think people remember these pictures before Mansfield itself changed maybe not for the better but then again it’s one that we may call progress .

  • The photograph was taken from Station Road with the Midland Hotel behind the photographer. Just outside and to the left of the picture would have been the old Quaker Meeting House on Quaker Lane – not Quaker Way- which ran from Belvedere Street behind the Foister Clay and Ward factory to Queen Street emerging between the Coop building and the Queens Head pub. At the Belvedere Street end was a Polish watchmakers/repairers shop and Bob Crow’s butchers shop.
