  • Hi
I’m Tracey Crosby the daughter of Stan Crosby who owned Crosby’s Corner.
I’m loving the comments about my dad and grandad Richard Crosby.
To the gentleman who commented that he was your grandad: please get in touch. Any pictures anyone has please 🙏 I would love to see them xx
Editor’s note: If the gentleman who Tracey is referring to would like to get in touch with her, please contact the editors through the website and we will arrange this for you.

  • As teenage lads we would gather at the chippy near Edge Hill garage which was in the corner of the showroom.
Along Portland St. on one side were terraced houses, on the other side were cattle meadows as far as Kingsley Dr.
On cold autumn nights we would stand there eating our chips and watch the mist come up the fields about 2ft deep, it rolled up the 4ft wall down the other side and across the road to the houses, we watched this amazing sight many a night.

  • I remember this site many years ago when there was a row of stone cottages there with a track to a cottage and builders yard. Around the back the lockup store places which were also stone lined, and the track on one side to the builders yard belonging to Harold Ashley who’s depot was on Albert Square.
The family of Newtons lived in the end cottage and also a man named Abba and girl Marina who was the fastest girl runner in our school.

  • Passed here today, and the ground shown in the pictures has footings being dug out, possibly for building by the look of things.

  • I remember it because Richard Alwyn Crosby was my grandad. I didn’t realise that it began its (short) existence in 1969 though.

  • To former Woodhus lad, the land to the left of what was Crosby’s car park here, behind that was lock up type units and garages. The land further behind was just derelict up to the end of Poplar Street, and where the big house stood in it’s own ground “The Poplars” I think it was called, this was demolished a while ago.The other land  is now developed for housing as can be seen from the main road on Portland St.

Now there was a man and  his shop when you get anything when all the other shop’s were shut and even on a Sunday and Bank Holidays to. To the left of the pictures can any reader remember the old stone buildings /cottages although not in the picture but must be long gone by now .Can anyone remember the buildings ?
