Very memorable places, shops etc., especially, but not only Leckenbys Store. Just noticed that the Green Dragon pub is mentioned on Leeming Street. I don’t recall the pub in this location, however I do remember the ‘Green Dragon’ pub which was situated on Fairholme Drive Mansfield. Have been unable to visit the town for some time now but was wondering if the ‘Fairholme Drive’ premises mentioned are still open / closed / demolished or whatever. Thanks..

Worked here for my first job, mid sixties, many good memories of being the errand boy, and then behind the cheese, bacon counter, with Roy, Brian, Mrs. Marsh, Mrs. Stimpson, some young ladies, Joan, Joy, Jill, Bev. A small cake shop between Leckenbys and Macfisheries. Mr. Richardson drove the delivery van, Norman also a driver. First floor up dealt with making the orders to be delivered, Mrs. Else in charge, and Pam present. The manager, Mr. Sydney Hawkins terrified me, always working non stop. Pay for the week, under £4.00.

When walking Leckenbys past on my way to school I used to look up at the 3 dragons on the top of the three gable ends. I think they disappeared when Wigfalls closed down. Does any one know why and by whom they were removed?

On my 80th birthday extracts from the Chronicle March 19th 1937 I saw an advert for Golden Fannings Tea, the connisseurs choice. Anyone heard of it?

Worked there late fifties for a short while delivering groceries on the shop bike – a heavy bike, with heavy basket up front, loaded or otherwise, and poor brakes. A bit scary riding down the hill to pick stuff up from the market. Leckenbys Store was considered a bit High Class in those days, with some justification I feel.. Collected stuff from the Home & Colonial store also which was located in the Market Place area.

I worked at leckenbys for 3yrs as warehouse lad then onto shop floor before I left to go to the pit. Sydney Hawkins was the manager at the time

Mcfisheries was below Boots I think there was another shop between them. My Uncle Cyril Baguley was manager there in the late 50’s. On the opposite side to Leckenbys at one time was Landers bread shop - nearby I think a clothes shop – Kent & Coopers pianos – Campbells furniture – Vallance & Davison tv/radio – A clothes shop run by Phil?and his brother. At the bottom was a men’s clothes shop. Back in the day Mansfield had a lot going for it for a girl born in the early 1940’s Great shops/market and of course I have to mention the Palais Wed. night and Sunday afternoon would you believe. And of course the Bentinck Coffee bar which went on to become a Chinese.

Angela wasn’t Gilberts dress shop on the other side of the road to Leckenbys? I think that was the one below Vallances it had two side windows narrowing as you walked towards the entrance. The owners were brothers, I remember the Phil had black wavy hair. Val.

No Alan, Wigfalls took over Leckenbys shop. MacFisheries was further down. The Green Dragon pub and Beard and Freemans shop was demolished in 1963 to make way for the MacFisheries food centre. The Green Dragon (which I can just about remember) was built in 1800, there was a plaque on the wall stating this.

I don’t think so Alan I seem to remember them from when I was quite young, as I recall MacFisheries were about half way between Lekenbys and the market.

Loved going into Leckenby’s with my Mum, I think it was possibly the first grocery store in Mansfield (for me anyway) where you picked up a wire basket at the entrance. The smell of freshly ground coffee was wonderful.
The other shops on that side of the road were Gilbert’s dress shop to the right of Leckenby’s and then below Leckenby’s was The Red Rose cake shop, Hepworth’s men’s outfitters, Mac Market, Boots chemist, Pork Farm Butchers, Macfisheries and then the Midland Bank.

Lekenbys is a store I’ll never forget I used to go there with my parents in the 1950s one of the few shops at that time in town with plate glass doors. I recall walking into them once when they were closed thinking they were open, I didn’t do that again but the thing I remember most about the store is the wonderful aroma of the freshly ground coffee as soon as you walked in the smell hit you. Perhaps that’s why I’ve always enjoyed freshly made filter coffee. I seem to think that in the 1960s it ended up being absorbed by the Fine Fare group. Also on Leeming Street a bit further down the hill was a Wigfalls, possibly a Currys when they were a much smaller set up than they are now and a Mac Fisheries but I don’t remember who any of the other shops were occupied by.
