Congregational Church

This Congregational Church opened in 1878 was the work of the eminent regional architect Watson Fothergill. Michael Jackson writes ’it was large and dominantly sited at the end of Westgate’.(1)

On the Watson Fothergill website, it is suggested that the congregational church was sadly neglected for years and then demolished in the early 1980’s. The closing Service took place Thursday 1st October 1981.

The demolition photographs were taken in April 1982

Memories

Edith Levick has happy memories of this church, she was married there and her two children were baptised there. She recalls on entering the main door you could then go to the left or the right into the main body of the church. There were pews and a balcony.  The organ was a Wallis organ and was situated behind the communion table. when the church closed it went somewhere on the East Coast.
